Tuy nhiên, tại mùa giải năm ngoái, thanh danh của giải Quả cầu vàng đã bị lu mờ khi tờ Thời báo Los Angeles điều tra ra rằng trong số các thành viên của Hiệp hội báo chí nước ngoài (cơ quan tổ chức giải Quả cầu vàng) hoàn toàn không có người da màu. Nhiều nghệ sĩ, nhà làm phim đã bày tỏ sự tức giận và phản ứng về điều này. Tom Cruise đã trả lại 3 bức tượng vàng của mình, còn đài truyền hình NBC vốn gắn bó lâu năm với giải thưởng đã từ bỏ, không phát sóng lễ trao giải.
Năm nay, hệ thống truyền hình CMCSA.O đã đồng ý phát sóng lễ trao giải Quả cầu vàng năm 2023, sau khi Hiệp hội báo chí nước ngoài cải tổ lại. Dự kiến lễ trao giải sẽ diễn ra vào ngày 10/1/2023 và được truyền trực tuyến trên kênh Peacock.
Ngày 12/12, HFPA đã chính thức công bố các đề cử của Quả cầu vàng 2023.
